Idea: Get people to link to your content from theirs

People linking to your website and blog posts is a signal to Google that your content is good. This means you will rank higher for keyphrases people search for. Building backlinks is critical for your search optimisation to be effective.

How?

  • Ask for one: Hey, here’s a post you could link to. And here’s what I’ll do for you.
  • Engineer one: Write a guest post on a higher ranking site than yours.
  • Relationship one: Join a link building Slack workspace.
  • Earn one: Promote your content and make it so good/full of data/comprehensive that people organically link to it.
  • Buy one: Pay someone to add a link to their site (frowned upon obv).
  • Beg one: Tweet and ask people to link to your content

BUT it’s only worth gaining good links.

What’s a good link?

One with these 5 attributes:

  1. Relevance
  2. Authority
  3. Anchor text
  4. Rel attribute
  5. Link placement

Relevance

The website must have some relevance to yours. E.g. a digital marketing magazine links to you rather than a fishing newspaper.

Authority

You’ll grow faster if you get links from high authority sites (even better if in your niche).

Website "Authority" Checker

Here are two good uses cases: If your website "authority" is higher than that of your competitors, then your site is stronger than theirs in terms of "link popularity." For example, ahrefs.com has a Domain Rating of 88. Moz.com has a Domain Rating of 91.

Anchor text

Ideally, what they put as the link matched your keyphrase.

Bonus points for exact match, but don’t sacrifice an exact match for no link.

Rel attribute

You want a “do-follow” link. Though google published that it also rewards no-follow.

Link placement

Higher the better but again don’t sacrifice placement over getting the link in the first place.

Above the fold is your target. Suggest where your link could be placed to make a marketer’s life easy.
